Malaysia extends duration of visa-free entry for Taiwanese visitors

(By Elaine Hou)

Taipei, Sept. 15 (CNA) Taiwanese passport holders are now allowed to stay in Malaysia visa-free for 30 days, up from the previous 15 days, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Monday. The ministry said it welcomes the move by Malaysia to extend the duration of visa-free entry for Taiwanese visitors.

The new measure came after Malaysia in 2011 granted visa-free treatment to Taiwanese passport holders, allowing them to stay for up to 15 days. The new rule is expected to boost bilateral people-to-people exchanges, creating more convenience for tourists from both countries to each other's country and facilitating short-term business travel, the ministry said.

The visa-free treatment is only for tourism and short-term business and exchange visits, the ministry said, adding that visits for other purposes still require a visa. The new measure comes as bilateral visits increased from 540,000 in 2011 to 710,000 in 2014.
